Week Eight - Gentleness

This Week’s Big Idea

Self-control isn’t about trying harder or relying on greater willpower. It is the fruit of a life surrendered to the Holy Spirit. When the Holy Spirit is in control, our words, emotions, desires, and decisions begin to reflect His character instead of our impulses.

Today's Scripture

Galatians 5:22-23 (NLT) “But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”

Matthew 11:29 (NLT)“Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

Today's Seed

“I’m just not a gentle person.” Maybe you’ve said it, or maybe you’ve dressed it up a little by saying, I’m just direct, I’m passionate, I tell it like it is, or, that’s just my personality.” We can come up with a lot of explanations for why we respond the way we do.

But there’s a problem. Gentleness is a fruit of the Spirit, and throughout this series we’ve established something important: God gets to define the fruit. Culture doesn’t define patience.

Our circumstances don’t define joy. Our preferences don’t define kindness. And our personality doesn’t get to define gentleness. God does.

When we hear the word gentle, we often picture someone quiet, passive, timid, or maybe even weak. But that’s not the biblical picture at all, Jesus described Himself as gentle. Think about that, the One who calmed storms, the One who confronted religious leaders, the One who drove money changers from the Temple, the One who stood before Pilate without fear and the One who could call legions of angels to His defense.

Jesus said: “I am…gentle at heart.” Jesus wasn’t weak, His strength was completely surrendered to the Father. That’s gentleness. Gentleness is power wrapped in peace.

The Holy Spirit isn’t trying to make you a nicer version of yourself. He’s forming the character of Jesus in you. Eventually we have to stop excusing things God wants to transform.

Maybe harshness or anger comes naturally to you or maybe you have the ?gift? of sarcasm. But the Fruit of the Spirit has never been about what comes naturally. It’s about what the Holy Spirit produces supernaturally. Thankfully we don’t have to remain who we’ve always been. The Holy Spirits desire is continually form Christ in us. Sometimes scripture and prayer, and sometimes He puts us in situations where what is really inside us comes spilling out, and that’s when we discover whether gentleness has simply become something we believe…or something we’re becoming.

Beneath the Surface

The Greek word Paul uses for gentleness is prautēs (πραΰτης). It is sometimes translated meekness, which can be misleading in modern English because we often associate meekness with weakness or timidity. Biblically, prautēs describes a disposition that refuses unnecessary harshness, aggression, or self-assertion. It is strength governed rather than strength removed, which is why Jesus is the perfect definition. Gentleness isn’t the absence of strength, it is strength surrendered to God.

Don't Miss this

Jesus didn’t save us simply to forgive who we’ve been-He is transforming us to become like Him.

Tend the Garden

Spend a few quiet moments reflecting.

1. When you hear the word gentleness, what immediately comes to mind-strength or weakness?
2. Where would the people closest to you say you most need the Holy Spirit to produce gentleness?
3. What changes when Jesus-not your personality-becomes your definition of gentleness?

water the seed

Pay attention today to the moments when you feel yourself becoming defensive, irritated, impatient, or harsh. Don’t focus on changing your behavior, instead pray: “Holy Spirit, produce the fruit of gentleness in me! Then notice what happens to your words, your tone, and your response.

Grow this in me

Father,

Thank You that You love me as I am, but you don?t want to leave me that way. Thank You that the Holy Spirit, is continually forming the character of Jesus in me. Forgive me for the times I’ve excused harsh words, or reactions saying, “That’s just who I am.” I don’t want my personality, upbringing, or habits to have the final word over who I become. Lord, teach me to carry strength without harshness, conviction without arrogance, and truth without cruelty. Change my accent, attitude, and actions until people around me experience more of Jesus through me. Today, I surrender my strength to You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen

God produces the fruit. We create the conditions. Stay connected to the Vine. Stay planted. Trust the process. The fruit is coming
