Week Four: From Here to There

This Week’s Big Idea

We were made for here, but we’re built for more. God has placed us in this time, this season and this generation with gifts, opportunities and an assignment. But He has also placed eternity in our hearts. The longing for “more” isn’t satisfied by simply getting more—it points us beyond what is temporary toward something eternal. We have eternity in here, but we have an assignment out there. What God has placed in us is meant to become seed in someone else’s world.

Today's Scripture

Acts 1:8 (NKJV) “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Matthew 5:16 (NKJV) “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Today's Seed

When you hear the words “mission field,” where does your mind go? Africa? South America? Somewhere overseas? Maybe a missionary standing in a place you’ve never been, speaking a language you don’t understand. That certainly can be a mission field. But you have one too.

Jesus told His disciples they would be His witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and eventually to the ends of the earth. There was a global assignment—but it started right where they were.

There’s a principle here that is much closer to home. Everybody has a “there.” There’s somewhere you go when you leave here. There’s somebody you encounter when you leave here. There’s a world you walk into every morning that most of the people sitting in church with you will never enter. Whether it’s your workplace, your neighborhood, school, the gym, coffee shop, the people you do business with … that’s your THERE!

Sometimes we miss our assignment because it looks too much like our ordinary life. We’re waiting for God to send us somewhere significant while overlooking the people He has already placed around us. But what if your workplace isn’t just where you earn a paycheck? What if the ball field isn’t just where your kids play? What if your neighborhood isn’t just where your house happens to be? What if God has strategically placed you in those spaces because there are people there who need what you’re carrying?

We’ve learned that there’s treasure in you—but now we know where some of that treasure is supposed to go. It’s supposed to go … There! You don’t have to preach a sermon. You don’t have to force a conversation. You simply show up carrying Jesus into places where God has already given you influence. Share your story when the opportunity comes and keep planting seeds – None of us can reach everybody, but everybody can reach somebody.

Beneath the Surface

The Greek word translated “witnesses” in Acts 1:8 is martys (μάρτυς) , meaning a witness—someone who testifies to what they have seen, heard or experienced. Jesus wasn’t merely asking His followers to know something about Him; He was empowering them to carry what they had experienced into the world around them. A witness doesn’t have to know everything. A witness simply tells what they know and lives from what they have experienced.

Don't Miss this

None of us can reach everybody, but everybody can reach somebody.

Tend the Garden

Spend a few quiet moments reflecting.

1. Where is your “there”—the places you regularly go when you leave church?
2. Who are the people in those places that God has already given you relationship or influence with?
3. Have you been overlooking your everyday world because it feels too ordinary to be an assignment?
4. What could change if you began entering those places thinking, “God sent me here with seed”?

water the seed

Make a short “My There” list today. Write down three places you regularly go and one or two people you know in each place. Choose one person and intentionally plant a seed this week—encourage them, serve them, pray for them, invite them, or simply take time to listen. Don’t make it complicated. Reach your world.

Grow this in me

Father,

Open my eyes to see my everyday world differently. Help me recognize that my workplace, neighborhood, family, friendships and routines can all become places where Your love is seen. Holy Spirit, empower me to be a witness for Jesus. Give me sensitivity to recognize opportunities. Give me courage when it’s time to speak and wisdom to know when simply loving, serving or listening is the seed that needs to be planted. I know I cannot reach everybody. But I can reach somebody. Show me my “there.” Show me my somebody. Then help me faithfully carry what You have put in me into the world You have placed around me.

In Jesus’ name, Amen

God produces the fruit. We create the conditions. Stay connected to the Vine. Stay planted. Trust the process. The fruit is coming.

Looking ahead

Day Five — Planting Beyond Your Lifetime

What if the seed you plant produces a harvest you never personally see? Hebrews 11 describes people who saw promises from a distance, believed them and embraced them—even though they didn’t experience everything their faith was preparing. Tomorrow we’ll finish the week with a bigger view of faith: I don’t have to see the harvest to believe in the power of the seed.

MORE DEVOTIONALS

ALIVE

The things we try hardest to hold onto are often the very things God asks us to plant.

Prayer & Prodigal

Return to the Father. Receive what He has provided. Cultivate the relationship.

Prayer & Prodigal

You can be close to the house and still be starving inside.

Prayer & Prodigal

You don’t have to wonder whether God hears. Come to Him believing.

Prayer & Prodigal

Sometimes the answer isn’t a louder prayer. It’s less noise.

Prayer & Prodigal

God opened the channel before you ever thought to call.
