Week One: There’s More Than Fruit

This Week’s Big Idea

Fruit is the visible evidence of God’s invisible work in us. But there’s more than fruit. God designed fruit to carry seed—what proves His faithfulness in the past also carries potential for the future. The fruit of yesterday contains the seed for tomorrow. Faith celebrates what God has done while planting for what God will do next.

Today's Scripture

Ephesians 3:20–21 (NKJV) “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”

Genesis 21:33 (NKJV) “Then Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there called on the name of the LORD, the Everlasting God.”

Today's Seed

There’s a difference between hoping something will happen and preparing because you believe it will. Noah built before there was rain. Abraham planted for a future he couldn’t see. The disciples gathered what little food they had before Jesus fed thousands. Again and again in Scripture, faith moves before sight provides proof. That’s because faith sees differently.

Think again about Abraham. God gave him a promise long before He gave him Isaac. For years, Abraham had nothing visible to prove that the promise would happen. Then Isaac finally arrived. Abraham could hold the promise in his arms. But what Abraham was holding wasn’t the end of the story. There was more inside the promise. Isaac contained Jacob. Jacob contained Israel. Israel contained generations. And eventually, Jesus. Abraham could see one boy. God could see generations.

That’s why planting the tamarisk tree matters so much. Abraham wasn’t simply celebrating what God had done. His experience of God’s faithfulness gave him confidence to plant for what God would do next. And that’s where this entire week has been taking us. There’s seed inside the fruit. Faith plants for a future it cannot see. Firstfruits tell us there is more coming. And now faith asks: “If I really believe there’s more, what am I preparing for?”

Maybe you’ve been praying for something, but haven’t prepared for the answer. Maybe God has given you a gift, but you’ve been waiting for the perfect opportunity before developing it. Maybe there’s someone you’re believing will come to Christ, but you’ve never invited them. Maybe you’re believing God for greater influence while ignoring the opportunity already in front of you.

Faith doesn’t manufacture God’s promise. Faith doesn’t force God’s timing. But genuine faith does something with what God has placed in its hands. Faith prepares for what God has promised before sight can prove anything is happening.

Beneath the Surface

Paul closes Ephesians 3 with some of the biggest language in the New Testament: “Exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think.” The Greek expression is unusually emphatic: hyper ek perissou —language reaching for the idea of beyond abundance, beyond expectation, beyond what we can presently imagine. And then Paul tells us why: “To Him be glory in the church…to all generations.” John 15 and Ephesians 3 come together beautifully. God works in us, we bear much fruit, the Father is glorified, more seed is planted, and His work continues into another generation.

Don't Miss this

Faith doesn’t require you to know exactly what tomorrow’s harvest will look like. Faith prepares for what God has promised before sight can prove it’s coming.

Tend the Garden

Spend a few quiet moments reflecting.

1. Where can you see fruit that proves God has already been working in your life?
2. What seed has God placed in your hands that needs to be planted?
3. Is there something you’ve stopped planting because you haven’t seen a harvest yet?
4. If you truly believed God has more ahead, what would you begin preparing for today?

5. Who could experience tomorrow’s fruit because of a seed you faithfully plant today?

water the seed

Finish this sentence: “Because I believe God isn’t finished, this week I will __________.”

Make it specific and plant the seed. Have the conversation. Serve. Give. Invite. Pray. Prepare.

Don’t wait until you can see the entire harvest. Faith moves while the future is still beyond the horizon.

Grow this in me

Father,

Thank You for every receipt of Your faithfulness in my life. When I look backward, I can see places where You planted, grew, provided and produced what I could never have produced on my own. But I believe there’s more. Give me faith to recognize the seed inside the fruit and courage to plant it. Keep me from becoming so comfortable enjoying yesterday’s harvest that I fail to prepare for tomorrow. You are El Olam—the Everlasting God. You see beyond the boundaries of my lifetime and beyond the horizon of what I can see. Teach me to plant faithfully and trust You with the growth. Use my life, my gifts, my prayers, my generosity and my obedience to produce fruit that brings glory to Jesus and reaches generations beyond me You are able to do exceedingly abundantly above anything I can ask or imagine, so I’ll keep planting.

In Jesus’ name, Amen

God produces the fruit. We create the conditions. Stay connected to the Vine. Stay planted. Trust the process. The fruit is coming.

Looking ahead

Next Sunday: More than Fruit - Dirty Word

Next Week’s Big Idea: Let the dirt work We don’t see everything yet. But we can see enough to know God is working.
